LifeBuilder will be using this year’s International Women’s Day theme of “Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women” to celebrate the women it has helped out of poverty in India. LifeBuilder has given 100s women skills and enterprise training so they can access work and a reliable income.
LifeBuilder’s UK Director, Melanie Brown says “This year’s international Women’s Day of promoting equal access to education and training to allow women access to decent work is a fantastic opportunity to pause for and remember those women LifeBuilder works with who have worked so hard at finding a route out of their poverty through our training projects. This year also marks the 100th International Women’s day, we are asking people to commemorate this by donating £100 – this is the cost of providing a woman with her first cow and a route out of poverty”
Women in India find it harder than men to access education and employment. LifeBuilder believes that empowering women with skills and enterprise opportunities is an effective way of changing circumstances for poor women. In just over 12 months, over 550 women have found a route out of poverty through LifeBuilder’s Women’s Dairy Enterprise project – a project which trains women to be dairy farmers, links them to a state of the art dairy and helps them access micro finance so they can own their first cows. The project allows women who have never had a secure income and lived a life in poverty to gain a reliable, decent income – giving them and their families a route out of poverty.
Jaswinder Kaur, one of the beneficiaries of the Women Dairy Entrepreneur project describes her life: “Before becoming a Women Dairy Entrepreneur I was struggling to make ends meet, with no land or employment I saw little hope.” She goes on to say “Now this has changed. The money I earn from my cows can ensure my children can attend school and that I can provide for them and my husband. I feel proud of what I have achieved."
