The Blog: A Fundraiser actually does a Fundraiser and she can’t wait - Wednesday 9th March 2011.
Before Christmas I confessed here that despite being a professional fundraiser I hadn’t actually taken part in a fundraising challenge event. Well that will all be different from 4pm on Thursday 10th March when I start my 30 hour sponsored silence for LifeBuilder. My aim is to raise more than enough money to help seven women on to LifeBuilder's women's dairy enterprise programme - giving them a route out of poverty.
All my life I have been told I’m too loud (an iphone decibel app recorded my volume in an admittedly busy pub as being 90db – enough to cause sustained hearing damage) or too talkative so now I want to prove everyone wrong, also give my long suffering colleague Melanie and my flatmate Kate a bit of a break and of course raise money for LifeBuilder.
I’m not going to lie – I’m a touch scared now. I have set up facebook pages, tweeted excessively about it, set up a virgin money giving page and even created some videos on YouTube to publicise what I’m doing – so I’m pretty sure there is no going back now. The idea of 30 hours of silence with added task which would normally make me loud/rant is rather daunting. However the response I have gotten since I said I was going to do this sponsored silence is amazing and the money raised so far isn’t bad either. But the thing which has surprised me the most is that I’m actually really looking forward to doing this. I get excited whenever one of my friends starts asking me questions about it or every time I get some sponsorship. And I’m really excited by the idea of actually achieving this – it really is a challenge for me – and there is the added benefit that I will now have a comeback whenever again I am told I’m loud.
