“I’m so happy” says Manjit “I finally feel that there is a better future for me and my husband – one where we can afford the medical attention he needs and I have time to care for him”
Manjit Kaur lives in Pudain – a small village in Punjab, India with her husband Gurmail. Manjit and Gurmail were forced to work long hours doing hard, unreliable, casual labour just to have enough money to survive – they were just able to make ends meet. However the hard labour took its toll on Gurmail’s health when he started suffering chest pains and having severe heart problems.
Gurmail’s poor health meant that he was no longer able to take the casual hard labour work which was on offer – leaving him and Manjit with very little income. Medical bills become too much for them and they feared for Gurmail’s future. Manjit was finding it harder and harder to get work as she couldn’t work a full day as she needed to care for Gurmail. Manjit and Gurmail had fallen into a cycle where they could see no way out of their poverty – and no way to continue to afford the cost of Gurmail’s medical bills.
That was until Manjit joined LifeBuilder’s Women Dairy Entrepreneur project. Here she was trained in how to look after cows, taught about finances and linked to a state of the art dairy. She was given seed funding to gain access to micro finance and micro insurance to purchase five cows. She was given a reliable income – a path out of poverty.
Now Manjit works just 4 hours a day and is earning more money than she ever did as a full time hard laborer. Her and Gurmail’s future looks brighter – they can afford his medical bills and they can now save for the future.
