Harbans Kaur, 55 years old, W/O Nachattar Singh lives in the village Gurma, Punjab and works at the Mukandpur CDU since Nov 24, 2010.

Harbans, mother of three children, Avtaar Singh, Balvir Singh and Baljinder Kaur was a house wife as her husband and older son, Avtaar, managed all household expenses. Nachattar used to do labour work and Avtaar worked in the electricity department.

Avtaar at the age of 34 got really ill and was hospitalized, Nachattar and Harbans borrowed approximately 60,000 for his treatment but tragically Avtaar died. Upon his death, his wife got her husband’s job and she re-located to her parents house. Avtaar’s death was a shock for his father which he could not cope with and started to go in depression and fell ill. Again, Harbans borrowed money for Nachattar’s treatment but after two years of medical treatment Nachatter passed away.

After the death of Avtar and Nachattar, Balvir, 25 years old, got married and now and has two children, Balvir in unemployed, alcoholic and addicted to drugs. His wife, Baljinder (same name as daughter), and mother are part of the WE program and run the household expenses. Harbans’s daughter, 27 years old, has recently separated from her husband due to domestic violence and currently lives with her mother.

Harbans and her daughter in law are grateful to the MDVL program for providing the opportunity to earn and live as they please with the necessities that they have always required, “if this program was not available, I am not sure if I could have survived and supported my family,” says Harbans.

After joining the MDVL program, Harbans was able to repay the loan she had taken for her son’s and husband’s medical treatment and manage the families expenses. Harbans along with her daughter-in-law, has done some home renovations to the house since joining the program, such as cement flooring in one of the room as it was previously mud and clay and have also bought many items for the house which were necessary, such as air cooler T.V stand, dressers and cabinets.  Harbans and her daughter in law plan to now get a cemented roof in the kitchen as it leaks during the rainy season.
