With a household income of less than £15 per month many rural families in Punjab find the demands of housing and feeding an entire family on £15 per month a real struggle. And when times of crisis come along such as a family illness and medical bills, it can become impossible. Such seeming luxuries as improving a child’s education are out of reach.

However just one cow can change all of this.

Providing a cow to a woman entrepreneur gives her a reliable livelihood to help support her family – it allows her to house, feed, care, pay medical bills and educate her family. All of this from just one cow costing £100. To donate now follow this link.

LifeBuilder’s programme is unique as it combines grassroots rural enterprise empowerment with a cutting edge dairy business. The poorest village women become cow owners through Lifebuilder grants and access to micro-finance. The women are trained into becoming dairy entrepreneurs. They are then provided by MDVL- LifeBuilder’s partner on this programme-with cutting edge facilities to house, milk and feed their cows in 'satellite dairy units'. These units have been located in rural villages to ensure that local women can access them with ease. This has enabled women who have never had jobs outside their household to become part of a modern model business.

With the provision of margin money to buy a cow, these women go from being the poorest of marginalised individuals, to a woman who has her own income, bank account, access to information on health, and an ability to take control of her own future in a way simply not possible before. LifeBuilder’s dairy entrepreneurship is a socially acceptable route for a rural Punjabi woman from a poor family to take. LifeBuilder works closely with not just the women, but their husbands, providing education and counselling to them also to ensure that the women’s path to greater security is as smooth as it can be.
