What would your life be like if you couldn't read this question?
Whilst we at LifeBuilder might think that LifeBuilder’s website is high up on most people’s essential list of things to be able to read, imagine what life would be like if you were unable to read any of the words on this page at all? Imagine what life would be like if you couldn't read or write at all:
If you can’t read then life is very hard. Not only are there the practical day to day problems, but if you can’t read it is very hard to start developing other skills -skills which may help you to gain a secure reliable income. You have very few ways of accessing information. You have little way of finding out about what rights and freedoms you have, without this knowledge you are disempowered to make informed decisions about you and your family’s life.
The literacy rate in India is approximately 68 per cent (and this could be over estimated as official estimates tend to ignore the semi-literates). However the gender disparity in literacy rates exasperates the alarming situation 52 per cent of women are illiterate in India. That means over half of the women in India can not read and write.
LifeBuilder wants to change this...
LifeBuilder is currently developing a programme which has already been tried, tested and proven a success. LifeBuilder will be giving poor illiterate Punjabi women the chance to be able to read and write with a course that can teach this in just six weeks. LifeBuilder will be making the illiterate literate.
LifeBuilder’s literacy programme is unique as it works using memory techniques to improve recall and association of letters. Rather than learning verbatim, the women will be taught to read and write using animated computer software in addition to similarly tailored reading and writing material. This method has trail blazed and made over 50,000 women across India literate, LifeBuilder are very excited to be developing the first Punjabi language version of this.
Over a six month period we can help 900 women on this programme – giving them the chance to read for the first time.
LifeBuilder are currently seeking funding for this programme. It costs just £30 to give a woman the gift of literacy changing her life. If you would like to discuss how you, your company, your community group or charitable trust could help support this project, please contact us.
